Annual Fund 2015 – 2016

The Friends of Hoboken Charter School Annual Fund

Dear Friends and HCS Families:

Our Annual Fund drive is going on now so that we and our community supporters can help Hoboken Charter School continue its mission. Our ability to have this educational option for the children is a result of the pioneers of Hoboken Charter School who founded the school and secured its first charter in January of 1998. Imagine the energy, inspiration and love it took to bring the dream of HCS to fruition. Past and current dedicated administrators, HCS Board members, Trustees/Officers of the Friends, Fundraising Chairs and all of those who have contributed monetarily and through volunteering have kept HCS thriving. This includes most of you.

The road hasn’t been easy either. In 2010, the school was notified that it would be losing the lease for much of its space in the Demarest building. The Board sprung into action to secure a lease/purchase option for our Lower/Middle school program at 713 Washington. And then after taking ownership of the building, on the 2nd day of the 2012 school year, the fire struck. An immense effort relocated the Lower/Middle School into temporary space in Jersey City a mere 11 days later with busing logistics, desks, supplies, and a host of other items the entire staff and community rallied to organize. Our administration and the mostly parent led Facilities Committee then undertook the exhaustive task of dealing with post-fire remediation, insurance, architectural planning, construction, zoning waivers, historical commission approvals, and more. This all resulted in returning to 713 Washington a year later.

Annual FundContribution Levels
That is the PAST. NOW we have inherited from those who came before us an alternative school choice in Hoboken, subject to the luck of a lottery draw, where all of us have chosen to send our children. A place where an incredibly talented and dedicated school administrator, Ms. Deirdra Grode, continues to build upon the founding mission of the school: Academic Rigor and Social Awareness. A school that is so fortunate to be able to attract and retain a wide array of exceptional teachers that commit themselves to educating and caring for our children. And the impact that Chris Sell has made with his team at the Upper School continues to expand upon the excellence that we know makes the founders of the school proud.

And what about the FUTURE? We must be good stewards for our own children today, but also for those who will be looking back in 5, 20, 50, and 80 years as the school approaches its own Centennial. $100,000 is the Friend’s minimum pledge back to support the current operating budget of HCS, in addition to a myriad of other commitments. Our practical need just to tread water necessitates a minimum of $150,000 per year, but there is so much more we need to and can do – so as with all educational institutions, there really is no limit. It also appears likely that soon we will be in need of a major overhaul of the heating system at 713 Washington, which is estimated to cost $150,000 – $350,000 and having survived the crises we have, as a responsible entity, we must begin to build up an endowment and emergency reserves.
