Annual Fund 2013 – 2014

The Friends of Hoboken Charter School Annual Fund 2013 – 2014

It has been an extraordinary year of challenges, but with the support of our community and so many families, friends, and businesses we have returned to Hoboken better than ever! That being said, even with the generous support we received last year, The Friends of Hoboken Charter School has had to incur an additional $500,000 – $600,000 of debt to complete our rebuild effort (on top of our significant primary mortgage).

Our school is so much more than a building. With 14 months of energy expended first on finding a temporary home and then returning us to our permanent home, we are all yearning to have the focus transition back to curriculum, programming, and educating. In order to do so and in order to look towards the future, we need to improve our financial security. We need your financial support again to reach our $150,000 goal for this 2013-2014 Annual Fund Campaign.

Annual FundContribution LevelsWho We Are

As a charter school that receives approximately 80% of the funding of local public schools, and with our desire to provide the most exceptional educational experience possible, there will ALWAYS be a need for us to conduct fundraising. This year, our needs are greater than ever and we need your support. We believe that the entire community of Hoboken is made stronger by having more people choose to raise their families here and make Hoboken their home. Having a variety of quality educational choices, including our fellow charter schools, private schools, parochial schools, and traditional public schools facilitates that objective. We want Hoboken Charter School to be a permanent part of this landscape so HCS can serve the current student body and future generations of Hoboken residents for years to come.

In the aftermath of the fire as we were drawn into the fundraising efforts, we looked up the old adage “Charity begins at home” and learned that the Scottish version of the proverb continues on with, “… but shouldn’t end there”. “Charity begins at home” can be interpreted to mean that we must first take care of our own needs, but is also frequently interpreted to mean that developing charitable, community-minded people comes from being raised in a charitable environment. “But shouldn’t end there” is self evident.

With our Service Learning philosophy this adage is quite apropos of the Hoboken Charter School. We have returned to 713 Washington St. but even as we continue to have our own immediate needs, we have already begun to give back again. Our children donated more than 85 lbs of Halloween candy for soldiers overseas by participating in “Operation Gratitude”, we are in the midst of a coat drive, our curriculum is infused with creating an awareness of the community around us – locally and globally, and our service learning director will once again lead efforts on behalf of the Hoboken Homeless Shelter, H20 for Life (providing water pumps for communities in Africa), and other causes. A strong Hoboken Charter School will continue to support others whose needs are even greater than our own and support the development of socially conscious citizens as our students mature into young adults. When supporting The Friends of Hoboken Charter School, you should know that your contribution won’t “end there”.
